In fact, the NYPD had stormed Stonewall Inn just a few days before the riot-inducing raid. Raids were still a fact of life, but usually corrupt cops would tip off Mafia-run bars before they occurred, allowing owners to stash the alcohol (sold without a liquor license) and hide other illegal activities. And it was one of the few-if not the only-gay bar left that allowed dancing. It was a nightly home for many runaways and homeless gay youths, who panhandled or shoplifted to afford the entry fee. It welcomed drag queens, who received a bitter reception at other gay bars and clubs. It was large and relatively cheap to enter. Nonetheless, Stonewall Inn quickly became an important Greenwich Village institution. What’s more, the Mafia reportedly blackmailed the club’s wealthier patrons who wanted to keep their sexuality a secret. Without police interference, the crime family could cut costs how they saw fit: The club lacked a fire exit, running water behind the bar to wash glasses, clean toilets that didn’t routinely overflow and palatable drinks that weren’t watered down beyond recognition. The Genovese family bribed New York’s Sixth Police Precinct to ignore the activities occurring within the club. Club attendees had to sign their names in a book upon entry to maintain the club’s false exclusivity. Stonewall Inn was registered as a type of private “bottle bar,” which did not require a liquor license because patrons were supposed to bring their own liquor. In 1966, they purchased Stonewall Inn (a “straight” bar and restaurant), cheaply renovated it, and reopened it the next year as a gay bar. The crime syndicate saw profit in catering to shunned gay clientele, and by the mid-1960s, the Genovese crime family controlled most Greenwich Village gay bars. When The Commission on Human Rights ruled that gay individuals had the right to be served in bars, police raids were temporarily reduced. In 1966, three years before Stonewall, members of The Mattachine Society, an organization dedicated to gay rights, staged a “sip-in” where they openly declared their sexuality at taverns, daring staff to turn them away and suing establishments who did. America’s first lesbian rights organization, The Daughters of Bilitis, was formed in San Francisco on September 21, 1955. Police raids forced them to disband in 1925, but not before they had published several issues of their newsletter, “Friendship and Freedom,” the country’s first gay-interest newsletter. gay rights organization, The Society for Human Rights (SHR), was founded in 1924 by Henry Gerber, a German immigrant. But engaging in gay behavior in public (holding hands, kissing or dancing with someone of the same sex) was still illegal, so police harassment of gay bars continued and many bars still operated without liquor licenses-in part because they were owned by the Mafia. Thanks to activists’ efforts, these regulations were overturned in 1966, and LGBT patrons could then be served alcohol.

A real barf-o-rama, all courtesy of Lard Ass's ingestion of raw eggs and castor oil. The most out-of-place scene in all of Stand By Me is Gordy's fictional story of how town fat kid nicknamed Lard Ass competes in a pie eating contest and gets the whole town to vomit all over each other. Castor Oil Makes you puke – Two words: Lard Ass. If you are going to walk on real train tracks, have the schedule handy. A fantastic, tense scene and a great lesson. Know the train schedule – "Does anyone know when the next train is due?" If only the boys had that info, they wouldn't have had to sprint across a bridge with a speeding train at their back. Scenes like this exchange between Teddy (Feldman) and Vern, while really funny, also are great examples of the undeniable chemistry exhibited by the young actors in the film. Superman – Thanks to Stand By Me, we know that Mighty Mouse could never beat up Superman because Mighty Mouse is a cartoon and Superman is a real guy. Case in point, the stuff with John Cusack as Denny, Gordy's deceased bother. Flashbacks can be incredibly effective when done right – It's not like Stand By Me was the first film to use flashbacks, far from it, but when used sparingly and in the right moments, they can have amazingly powerful effect. It's one of the many lines of dialogue in the movie that still reverberates through pop culture today. "Chopper, sick balls." - Who could forget the perfect scene of Gordy getting chased by the mythical junkyard dog Chopper whose owner had, supposedly, taught him to "sick balls?" No one, that's who. Plus, I credit the film for bringing a few of these quips back. So when you hear these little verbal gems in the movie, you always smile at their timeless cleverness. "So funny, I forgot to laugh" – If I grew up in the '50s, lines of dialogue like "So funny I forgot to laugh," or "I don't shut up, I throw up" might have been part of the norm but not so in the '80s and '90s. But in this one scene, the bad guys are each given a totally believable personality without saying a word about it. You're dying to know more about this game but can't believe each character's audacity. The scene is simultaneously exciting and terrifying. Three innings isn't an official game – As a young boy, the concept of "mailbox baseball" first came to my attention in Stand By Me as Ace and his crew smash mailboxes from a passing car with a bat. Plus, every time you watch it, be it the first time or 25 years later, you feel for Vern. Great, subtle but perfect character moments like this are what really bring the film together. Remember where you bury things – One of the funniest moments in Stand By Me is the scene of Vern (O'Connell) digging under his porch for his pennies. For the rest of the film, that piece of steel in Chris's bag looms like a cloud over the story, adding a perfect slice of drama. That's the moment you know things are going to go to another level. Guns raise the stakes – Stand By Me is just a sweet little movie until Chris shows Gordy (Wheaton) the gun he stole from his father. Unfortunately, with Phoenix's untimely death in 1993 we only saw a sliver of his potential while Sutherland has proved, time and again, that he's worthy of such praise. O'Connell was jolly and great (more on him later), Wheaton did a solid job in the lead, but Chris Chambers and Ace Merrill were simply boss: Confident, electric and impossible to take your eyes off of. River Phoenix and Kiefer Sutherland were stars – Director Rob Reiner did an unbelievable job casting Stand By Me but, even 25 years later, it's easy to see that Phoenix and Sutherland were the stand-outs. Once they are folded, the four three sided modules can form pairs in order to take as little space as possible. The folding principle of the modules is made in such way that the inside door of the thick walls can only be reached in the folded position. We decided to keep the hinges visible so that once unfolded the modules can still show their folding ability. When the module opens, the two panels join and the parts that endured transport are placed against one another so that only the clean part can be seen. When a module is folded, those two panels are deployed on both sides of the thick walls to protect them. The third wall of the modules is made of two panels joined together and has a protection purpose. We were then able to reduce the wall thickness of the two other modules to fourteen centimetres, since their sole purpose was to insure power supply. By working with 3D software to precisely plan the arrangement of the 24 boxes in the walls, we managed to make them all fit within four thick walls, that is to say two modules. Indeed some of the cuckoos are not mechanical and require electricity.ĭuring transport, all the cuckoos are separated in boxes that can be placed inside fifty centimetres thick walls. The two thick walls are hollow and include the power supply for all the electric cuckoos during the exhibition. We then adjusted different parameters such as: height, width, position and size of the shelves and windows.Īll the modules (except for the introduction one) are composed of two thick walls and one wall made of two wood panels. We created families of six cuckoos that would be displayed together, on the same module. We took into consideration the following criteria: electricity, display height, size, sound and associated objects. We chose this set-up for aesthetic but also technical reasons. We carried out an important work on how to place the 24 cuckoos, knowing that each module was showing six cuckoos, with two cuckoos per wall side. Project ImagesĮxcerpt of the distribution document for the 24 cuckoos Project DetailsĮach module of this scenography is unique, and was custom-designed for this very eclectic cuckoo series. Thanks to a system of double panels that can turn inside out, there is no need to over protect the folded modules for their transportation.Īll in all, designing this scenography was about finding the right balance between an atmosphere bringing together tradition and contemporary design, and answering to this very technical issue of an all-in-one itinerant scenography. All the folded modules can be placed on palettes, using very little space during transport. Once folded, two of the modules are used to host the cuckoos in the thickness of their walls. The result is foldable three sided modules using hinges that also take an esthetical part in the project. The foldable principle and the transport have been main considerations in the project and have had a big influence on the final shapes of the modules. They can enjoy the sounds produced by all the clocks. The modules also have openned ans closed windows in the same manner as traditional cuckoos do.īy adding those different house shaped walls in the space, the exhibition becomes a small cuckoo village where the visitors can freely wander. We decided to work with non-painted poplar wood usually used in the crafting of traditional cuckoo clocks. The chalet has also been a point of reference for choosing the materials. The design of the five wood modules of this scenography is inspired from the shape of the chalet, which is the main figure of traditional cuckoo clocks. This scenography is focusing on both the technical aspect of a foldable display and the creation of a set associating Swiss cuckoo clocks' tradition with their new design possibilities. The exhibition has now opened in Montreal and will then travel in various countries across the world, including Singapore and the United States. The main challenge was to design a display for the clocks that could also become a transportation case for the 24 objects. This project is an itinerant scenography for the exhibition 24 Hours in the Life of a Swiss Cuckoo Clock, presenting a series of 24 Swiss cuckoo clocks designed by students and professional designers from HEAD Geneva. Bluetooth can directly connect devices wirelessly without needing a common IP-based network.Unfortunately, that also means that AirPlay will not work when you’re away from your home or office unless you have a portable travel router that you can use to create a temporary Wi-Fi network. The only rule is that all AirPlay devices must be on the same network. Despite the name, AirPlay and AirPlay 2 will work over any IP network connection, whether wired or wireless (Wi-Fi).How is AirPlay 2 different than Bluetooth? House of MarleyĪlthough AirPlay and Bluetooth both allow audio to be streamed wirelessly, there are several important differences: This macOS support is only available on Mac models sold within the last few years but works on MacBooks, iMacs, the Mac Mini, and more. This can be used to show media on a larger screen if you want to share it with an audience, among other purposes. With the macOS Monterey update, Apple has also added the ability to AirPlay directly from another Apple device, like an iPhone or iPad, directly to your Mac. Apple’s tvOS turns your Apple TV into a “sender” device for audio, so if you’re playing a movie on Apple TV, you can turn every AirPlay 2 speaker in your home into an expanded home theater sound system - a handy feature for those without a dedicated soundbar or 5.1 home theater system. The same goes for the Apple TV and Apple TV 4K streaming devices. Does AirPlay work on all my Apple devices?ĪirPlay 2 is baked into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, so whether you’re using an Apple mobile device or computer, you’ll have full control of audio playback. For some people, this will mean they no longer need an Apple TV device at all - especially as many of these same TVs will be getting Apple’s TV app too. Smart TV models from Samsung, LG, Vizio, Toshiba, and Sony are now AirPlay 2-compatible, as are all Roku TVs and select 4K-capable Roku player devices. AirPlay 2 can also be used to control streaming video, and on many more devices than just an Apple TV.None of Apple’s wireless headphones are compatible with these formats, however wireless earbuds from other manufacturers are beginning to emerge which do support lossless audio over Bluetooth. As with AirPlay, AirPlay 2 supports lossless, 16-bit/44.1kHz CD-quality audio streams - one of several levels of lossless audio now offered by Apple Music. If you own two of Apple’s HomePods or HomePod Minis, you can use AirPlay 2 to set them up as a stereo pair.Initially, this only worked with an Apple Music subscription, but Apple has been adding support, including Deezer, Spotify, Pandora, and more. For fans of Apple’s Siri voice assistant, this is a big deal because Siri can control any devices that HomeKit recognizes. You can use the Home app to label these AirPlay 2 devices and add them to rooms and scenes, which can then be automated. Under the original AirPlay, only one could be used at a time. Stream music to multiple AirPlay 2-compatible speakers simultaneously, creating a true multiroom streaming system. What does AirPlay 2 do? AppleĪnnounced in 2017, AirPlay 2 builds on the original AirPlay feature set and lets you exert more control over AirPlay devices through Apple’s HomeKit platform. Receiver devices included Apple’s long-discontinued AirPort Express routers, but now include Apple TVs, Apple’s HomePod, HomePod Gen 2, HomePod Mini, Mac computers with Monterey macOS or newer installed, and a wide variety of supported third-party wireless speakers, as well as a number of smart TV platforms.ĪirPlay also lets you “mirror” the screen of an iOS/iPadOS/MacOS device to an Apple TV so that you don’t end up with a group of people huddling around a tiny screen just to see a map, photo, video, etc. How to pre-order the new Apple AirPods Pro 2īack then, sender devices included Windows computers running Apple Music, iOS devices including iPhones, iPods, and iPads, and Mac computers running macOS X Mountain Lion or later (depending upon the processor). However, Newton's contemporary and fellow Royal Society member, Robert Boyle, had already discovered the basic concepts of modern chemistry and began establishing modern norms of experimental practice and communication in chemistry, information which Newton did not use. It was not until several decades after Newton's death that experiments of stoichiometry under the pioneering works of Antoine Lavoisier were conducted, and analytical chemistry, with its associated nomenclature, came to resemble modern chemistry as we know it today. During Newton's lifetime, the study of chemistry was still in its infancy, so many of his experimental studies used esoteric language and vague terminology more typically associated with alchemy and occultism. His earliest encounters with certain alchemical theories and practices were during his childhood, when a twelve year old Isaac Newton was boarding in the attic of an apothecaries shop. From a young age, Newton was deeply interested in all forms of natural sciences and materials science, an interest which would ultimately lead to some of his better-known contributions to science. Much of what are known as Isaac Newton's occult studies can largely be attributed to his study of alchemy. Distinctions between science, superstition, and pseudoscience were still being formulated, and a devoutly Christian biblical perspective permeated Western culture. In the Early Modern Period of Newton's lifetime, the educated embraced a world view different from that of later centuries. Historical research on Newton's occult studies in relation to his science have also been used to challenge the disenchantment narrative within critical theory. Newton's scientific work may have been of lesser personal importance to him, as he placed emphasis on rediscovering the wisdom of the ancients. English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton produced works exploring chronology, and biblical interpretation (especially of the Apocalypse), and alchemy. |
